The Sky Suspended: A Fighter Pilot's Story (Paperback)
In 1939, at the age of nineteen, Jim Bailey was conscripted into the RAF to train as a fighter pilot. What happened over the next five years to Jim and the men he met, the men who fought, died, and survived, is related with candor and quiet modesty in this book. It describes the youthful heroism of his companions, and he captures the atmosphere of everyday life on the ground in wartime Britain, as well as the air battles.
'A haunting book brilliant' Financial Mail 'It is worthy to stand with the best of air-war memoirs. I've never read a book that was anything like it' Samuel Hynes 'As poignant [a piece of aviation literature] as I have ever read' Sunday Correspondent 'The best airmen are mostly simple people but occasionally there arises one, a poet, a philosopher, who succeeds in lending coherent reason to their love every airman of our age will feel [Jim Bailey has] given wings to his inmost thoughts' Group Captain Peter Townsend
Jim Bailey was born into a world in which 'ordinary' people were regarded as no more than cannon fodder, and well-heeled generals could do no wrong. But attitudes were changing by the time he decided to fight for King and Country in the early autumn of 1939. Now, ordinary mortals such as himself were to be given responsibilities previously unheard of, and tasked with nothing less than saving the country from Nazi tyranny. In a book first published in 1964 we learn what it was like to serve for five years as a fighter pilot, marvelling at the heroics of companion fliers and sometimes witnessing their deaths. Bailey describes his own part in the Battle of Britain and other aerial skirmishes with understated modesty but he evocatively captures the atmosphere of life in the air and on the ground in wartime Britain. His account has become a classic of its type and will long endure.(Kirkus UK)

B-2 Stealth
The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit (also known as the Stealth Bomber) is a multirole heavy bomber with "low observable" stealth technology capable of penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses to deploy both conventional and nuclear weapons. Because of its astronomical capital and operations costs, the project was controversial in Congress and among Pentagon brass during its development and placement into service. In time, Congress scaled back initial plans to purchase 132 of the bombers. By the early 1990s the United States elected to purchase just 21 of the bombers at US$737 million per aircraft. Total program cost averaged US$2.1 billion per aircraft in 1997 dollars.
The B-2 is operated exclusively by the United States Air Force with none in the Air Force Reserves. Though originally designed in the 1980s for Cold War operations scenarios, B-2s have been used in combat to drop bombs on Kosovo in the late 1990s, and see continued use during the ongoing Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Featuring formidable design specifications, a two officer crew aboard the bomber can drop up to eighty 500-pound class JDAM "smart" bombs, or sixteen 2,600-pound B83 nuclear bombs in a single pass through extremely dense anti-aircraft defenses. The bomber has been a prominent public spectacle at air shows since the 1990s. It has been the subject of espionage and counter-espionage activity. [wiki]

F-20
The F-20 Tigershark (initially F-5G) was a privately financed light fighter, designed and built by Northrop. Its development began in 1975 as a further evolution of Northrop's F-5E Tiger II, featuring a new engine that greatly improved overall performance, and a modern avionics suite including a powerful and flexible radar. Compared with the F-5E, the F-20 was much faster, gained beyond visual range air-to-air capability, and had a full suite of air-to-ground modes capable of firing most U.S. weapons. With these improved capabilities, the F-20 became competitive with contemporary U.S. fighter designs like the F-16 Fighting Falcon, but was much less expensive to purchase and operate.

F-22 Raptor
The Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is a fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It is primarily an air superiority fighter, but has multiple capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles.
The United States Air Force considers the F-22 a critical component of the U.S. strike force. The USAF states that the F-22 cannot be matched by any known or projected fighter aircraft. Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, Chief of the Australian Defence Force, said in 2004 that the "F-22 will be the most outstanding fighter plane ever built."
Faced with a protracted and costly development period, the aircraft was variously designated F-22 and F/A-22 during the three years before formally entering US Air Force service in December 2005, as the F-22A. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the prime contractor and is responsible for the majority of the airframe, weapon systems and final assembly of the F-22. Program partner Boeing Integrated Defense Systems provides the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and all of the pilot and maintenance training systems.

SU 35
The original Su-35 was a derivative of the Su-27 and essentially a ground-based variant of the Su-33. While the official Russian Air Force designation for the aircraft remained the Su-27M, Sukhoi rechristened the model as the Su-35 in the hopes of attracting foreign customers.
The Su-35 design was largely identical to the Su-27 but incorporated the canards of the Su-33 and more powerful engines plus a new digital fly-by-wire control system. The Su-35 was also equipped with a new multi-mode radar, infrared detectors, and upgraded weapons. The Su-35 development program experienced many delays due to the collapse of the Soviet economy, and the Russian military ultimately chose not to purchase any. Sukhoi instead used the eleven prototypes as technology demonstrators to interest the export market in funding a production model.

SU-30
The Sukhoi Su-30 (NATO reporting name "Flanker-C") is an agile military aircraft developed by Russia's Sukhoi Aviation Corporation and introduced into operational service in 1996. It is a multi-role strike fighter that can perform both air superiority and ground attack missions.
The aircraft is a modernized version of the Su-27UB and has several variants. The Su-30K and Su-30MK series have had commercial success. The variants are manufactured by competing organizations: KNAAPO and the IRKUT Corporation, both of which come under the Sukhoi group's umbrella. KNAAPO manufactures the Su-30MKK and the Su-30MK2, which were designed for and sold to China. Irkut makes the long-range, multirole Su-30MK series.
